Basically we differ between a series and an entry:

Entry:
A single contribution of a series.

Series:
The name of series which is produced by an editorial office.

Editorial office:
A collective of persons (or also just one), which produces a series. Each broadcast or parts of it (whole broadcasts, interviews, etc.) is called entry.

Simple Search

Use the simple search function to find entries. You can easy constrain your search criteria.

Within most of the fields multiple choices are possible. Click the "Ctrl"-Button on your keyboard and click on another item to select multiple items from the menu

Search term:
Type in your search term to find entries which contain this term either in the title, the description, the keyword or in the filename. What are the effects of using AND?
If you search after the terms "Africa" and "religion" you will find entries, which contain both of the words.

The search function will find entries that contain the search term as itself or as a part of another word. For example: If you search after "iron" you will also find entries which contain the words "environmental" or "irony".

What are the effects of using OR?
If you search after the terms "Africa" and "religion" and choose "Use OR instead of AND" you will find entries which contain either "Africa" or "religion". So you will get more results than using the more precise option AND

If you want to find all entries and just constrain your search criteria with the following options use the "browse"-function or leave the field "search term" blank.

Buzz phrase:
By choosing a buzz phrase out of the catalogue you will find entries that were assigned to this genre.

Language:
Choose the language in which the entry was produced. The maximum number of possible languages are two.

A login is needed for putting audiofiles on the server and describing them. If you just want to download files an account isn't necessary. If you have one you can login by clicking the "login"-button. To apply for a username and password, mail to ingo.leindecker@fro.at. To avoid the abuse of your account always logout by pressing the "logout"-button.

Change password

To change you password click the button "userprofile" after logging in. Enter your password two times in the fields "password" and "confirm". If the two passwords don't match an error message will be displayed. In this case your password remains constant. Attention: Your username and password mustn't be the same!

Upload an audiofile

By clicking the button "Upload" you will get the possibility to upload MP3- or Ogg Vorbis files into your personal directory on the server. Click the "Browse"-button and choose the desired audiofile on your harddisc. Click the "save"-button to upload the file. The upload process can take minutes up several hours dependent on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the file. After the upload has finished you will see the file in the directory list below the upload-form. Several data of the file are displayed: The filename, duration, the file format (codec) and the audio quality (bitrate). You can assure yourself of the fact the file has been uploaded correctly. If the file is defective a message according to this is being displayed. In this case you won't be able to add the file to the archive. To delete the file from the server click the X-icon on the right beside the file. If you upload two audiofiles with the same filename it will be overwritten! The file has to be a valid Mpeg Layer 3 or Ogg Vorbis file. It's inadequately to give the file the right extension (.mp3 or .ogg)!

Upload using ftp

It is also possible to upload audiofiles via FTP (file transfer protocol). If you want to upload bigger files it is necessary to use ftp because you will get a timeout error if the upload takes too long. To upload a file via ftp use a common ftp program. The ftp server is:

  • cba.fro.at
To login use your login and password. After the upload has finished you can login under http://cba.fro.at and describe your file (see "Complete entry") if it is a valid MP3 or Ogg Vorbis file.

If you don't have a ftp program you can also upload your file by using your browser. Enter the following line into the address field of your browser:

  • ftp://username@cba.fro.at

Replace "username" with your username. After pressing a window will appear which asks you to enter your username and password. After logging in you will see the content of your personal directory. Drag a file from your harddisc and drop it into the window. After the upload has finished you can login under http://cba.fro.at and describe your file (see "Complete entry").

Complete entry

If you uploaded an audio into your personal directory it's not published yet. Click the button "Complete entry" to describe the file and to add it to the public database by using the form. Next to "File in directory" choose the audiofile from the drop down menu which you are going to describe.

Assign it to the series it belongs to. If your series is absent you can create one by clicking the "add" button on the right of the drop down menu or clicking the "series"-button on the top navigation of the page. (See also "Edit series").

Give your entry a title. As short and as meaningful as possible.

Choose a buzz phrase from the list which fits the best for your entry. If you want a genre to be added mail to ingo.leindecker@fro.at

Additionally you can add keywords separated by spaces which lets visitors find your entry more easily. This field is optional.

Enter the date of production. This date must not be in the future! It is not the date of the broadcasting.

Describe the entry in whole sentences. In this field you can enter whatever you consider as important to know for people who would download or rebroadcast the audiofile. Enter a summary of the broadcst, necessary information to moderators, suggestions for moderations, background information, links etc.

Choose at least one language in which the broadcast was composed.

Click on the "save"-button to publish your entry. If you forgot the fill out one or more fields you will get an error message displayed. If you get the error message "The audiofile isn't a valid MP3 or Ogg Vorbis file" you can't publish your entry. (see "Upload an audiofile"). Delete the file by pressing the X-icon beside the filename on the "Upload"-page.

If the completion was clean the audiofile is going to be moved to a public directory and renamed after the following scheme:

series-date_time.extension

E.g. you upload a file named "test.mp3" on January 25th 2002 at 13:45:04 and assign it to the series "FROzine" the file is going to be moved and renamed to http://cba.fro.at/archiv/frozine/frozine-25-01-2002_13-45-04.mp3

You can either edit an entry by clicking the edit-symbol on the right beside the entry or delete it by clicking the X-symbol.

If you delete an entry you will be asked if you are really sure to remove it from the database. If so, the whole description of the entry will be deleted and the file will be moved back to your personal directory where you have the possibility to describe it again or completely delete it from the server.

What is RSS?

RSS means "Rich Site Summary". It is a platform independent format for the exchange of news and web contents which is based on the programming standard XML.

The structure of a RSS file is logical and built without any "ballast" like design or layout elements. In this way RSS files can be read and spreaded independently of the platform.

How can I integrate the CBA into my homepage?

With the RSS standard contents of the CBA (e.g. all entries of a specific series) can be integrated into another website. If you use a RSS reader (programs which can read RSS files and automatically track changes) you can watch changes of a website without having to load it completely with all graphics etc..

To do this you need a RSS reader. Here you find links.

The contents of the so called "RSS feed" can be integrated in other website layouts.

To include the contents of the CBA into your homepage you need a script which handles, filters and displays the contents.

You can display the following contents:

  • all entries of a specific series
For that you need the number (ID) of the series. Just open the following drop down menu and search for your series. The number in the braces is the id number of the series:

For servers which support the script language PHP ("Hypertext PreProcessor") we offer the following file which completely handles the rss file. The only thing you have to do is to set the number of the series and to change the layout.

Just download the file parse.txt rename it to "parse.php" and change line 133 (the 26th line from down below) as you add the id number of the series to the path of the rss feed.

    $rss->file = "http://cba.fro.at/rss/entriesfrombroadcast.rss.php?sendungen_id=1"

  • display the 10 most current entries of the cba
Use the following RSS feed: http://cba.fro.at/rss/overview.rss.php

How can I change the layout of the RSS feed?

After you made the last task the following part of the code is important for you:

Title: ".$array[ITEM][$x][TITLE]."<br>
Description: ".$array[ITEM][$x][DESCRIPTION]."<br>
Link: <a href=\"".$array[ITEM][$x][LINK]."\">".$array[ITEM][$x][LINK]."</a><br>
Date: ".$array[ITEM][$x][DATE]."

The variable:

$array[ITEM][$x][TITLE]
contains the title of the entry.

$array[ITEM][$x][DESCRIPTION]
contains the description of the entry.

$array[ITEM][$x][LINK]
contains the address of the entry.

$array[ITEM][$x][DATE]
contains the date of production of the entry.

The variables can be converted with all php functions and the html commands can be formatted at will.
